Learning in Outdoor Environments

There are infinite ways for educational institutions to help guide kids through their early years. For example, nursery schools, preschools and kindergartens, and the experiences they offer young children, don’t have to be limited to what’s inside their four walls; education can take place outside, too. The areas surrounding school facilities often provide fantastic opportunities for children to escape confined indoor spaces and open their eyes to natural settings that let them move, play, explore and learn in a completely new way.

In this very hands-on workshop, you’ll be able to try out new ideas and approaches for promoting children’s motor skills outside the classroom. You’ll also learn new methods for using outdoor areas just as they are for play-learning.

This exercise focuses on using various natural elements – light, shadows, water, grass, earth, sand, clay, rocks, and more – in ways that are both creative and practical. You’ll learn how to develop new settings and activities that will allow you to engage with preschoolers and kindergartners in a variety of projects and games outside the classroom.

You’ll discover how to prepare yourself for using outdoor areas for learning through play. Both outdoor and indoor “classrooms” can be allies in the educational process, so you’ll also have the opportunity to experiment with and understand the tremendous pedagogical potential of the various areas in and around your daycare center.

The concept behind “Outdoor Preschool & Kindergarten” is the result of my longstanding collaboration with Nicola Böcker-Giannini, a trainer and psychomotor education specialist with a Diplom degree in sports science.

Target groups

From childcare specialists, management staff, and educators working in nursery schools, preschools, kindergartens, and social institutions, to entire preschool and kindergarten teams, this workshop offers participants the opportunity to explore a range of outdoor play-learning spaces. It will give you an extensive “kit” of practical ideas designed to broaden and enrich your institution’s pedagogical approach.
In addition, those responsible for building maintenance and playground/landscape design can be taught the importance of outdoor spaces as play-learning environments for children, and learn how to reconcile their practical and technical concerns with educational objectives.
From incorporating a sandbox into a play-learning area to building an adventure landscape, this workshop focuses on taking a hands-on approach to the act of creating, and making it an integral part of kids’ own self-development.
We can also provide support to kindergartens, nursery schools and preschools in search of fresh ideas and solutions for designing outdoor, nature-focused programs for learning through play, and help them plan and realize their concepts. Whether dealing with an entire organizational concept or a single play-learning area, you can make the rediscovery of environments outside the classroom the hallmark of excellence of the educational services you provide.
